You've identified you need window film installation due to glare, heat, privacy, security or safety issues on your business site. Check.

Now how do you find a qualified, reputable installer?

Various aspects need to be considered when choosing a window film company. As with any supplier, one would expect the highest standards of work to deliver, top-notch customer service and of course, a quality end product that solves the initial problem.

But what separates a good window film company to the very best? We've devised a list of 15 questions that should be at the forefront of your mind when searching for the right partner.

Here is the ultimate checklist that will help you make an informed decision:

1. What brands do you install?

Here at Lustalux, we only work with the very best manufacturers in the industry including the likes of 3M, Hanita Coatings, Llumar, Solar Gard etc. Make sure the best material brands are worked with in order to receive the highest quality materials backed by strong warranties and after-sales service.

2. Do you understand the problem we're trying to resolve?

It's imperative that the issue itself has been identified to find the best solution. There are window films that have been specially designed for certain issues be that privacy and security or heat and glare. Otherwise, we cannot find the right product for the best outcome.

3. How long does the window film last?

Some externally applied films are now warrantied for a minimum of 10 years so the same as internal films. A decade ago externally applied films would only be warrantied for two-three years.

4. How much experience do you have in window film installation?

We've been installing window film since 1991 and over all those years we've installed a whopping 5 million square feet! So it goes without saying, we know a thing or two about them, we have the technical knowledge and expertise to tackle any installation across all business environments. How much experience has your window film company got?

5. Are you insured?

As with any business that comes onto your premises, it's important to know if they have the necessary insurance policies in place and to what value should an accident occur, to cover all legal bases.

6. Can you carry our a free site audit/survey?

Absolutely! It would be unreasonable in many cases to deliver a quote without a survey or audit. It's in both our best interests to have an initial, no obligation survey; to ensure both parties are on the same page when it comes to the main objectives and site conditions.

7. What is the process from enquiry to installation?

After you submit an enquiry, what are the next steps? Here at Lustalux, we aim to respond to all enquiries the same working day, carry out a survey promptly and have a quote with you within an agreeable time frame. But what are the next steps from here- how soon will it be installed, what are the payment options; these are all questions to ask your new supplier.

8. How long does the installation take?

The duration of the installation project depends on the size of the area, length of film required as well as weather conditions.

For example, a recent window film project for a major insurance company took around three weeks to complete the 1100m2 installation.

9. Are you IPAF accredited?

IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) promotes the safe and effective use of powered access equipment worldwide. It is one of the most recognised governing bodies of which you must pass a training course in order to receive a licence; just like the DVLA.

10. Do your products have a warranty?

As aforementioned, most films are now warrantied for a minimum of 10 years. Make sure you ask what length warranty comes as standard from the manufacturer, to give you complete peace of mind.

11. Are you able to work on construction sites? – CSCS

Similar to IPAF, the Construction Skills Certification Scheme helps keep workers in the UK construction industry safe. Having a CSCS card shows one holds a high level of skill and competence when it comes to hazardous substances, health and safety awareness and manual handling.

12. Do you have design and manufacturing capabilities?

As a one-stop-shop, we can design, manufacture and install which means you can save time using numerous suppliers as well as get everything you need under one roof. Whether you're looking for new graphics for the walls or windows, we have an in-house team of creative experts that can help bring your vision to life.

13. How long are quotations valid for?

We appreciate that as a business, you will have various steps to take in order to get budget signed off and a new supplier approved to your procurement list.

We endeavour to make the process as stress-free and smooth as possible for you, by ensuring quotations remain valid for a reasonable length of time.

14. Can the windows be cleaned when the film is applied?

What sort of general aftercare is required once the film has been installed? We advise avoiding cleaning your windows within the first 60 days after the installation as it requires a curing time to ensure maximum bonding to the glass.

A soft, clean, cotton cloth is recommended to prevent surface scratching; and for washing, we do not advise using solutions that include ammonia. Most window films include a durable, scratch-resistant coating but always follow the care instructions that are provided after installation.

15. Will your product work on…

Be sure to let the window company know what the glass type is e.g. float, laminated, toughened or polycarbonate; as some products may or may not be applicable. Polycarbonate, for example, limits the range of window films that can be applied. Information such as frame type, window condition, and double glazing are all essential facts they will need to be established during the survey.

Our dedicated team of expert window film installers are trained in the art of installing all types of window film. We are a full-service window film company that can offer consultation on glazing regulations and compliance as well as providing a quick smooth installation with minimal disruption.
