A 30-metre continuous mural entitled Flow had to match seamlessly across walls and glazing at a new hospital in Kirkwall, with travel, ferry and freight logistics part of the delivery plan.

For the new Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall, Lustalux worked with artist Samantha Clark to translate a 30-metre ocean-scene artwork, Flow, across both solid walls and glazing. Where windows interrupted the wall design, the artwork was printed onto clear window film so the composition continued across the glass.
Travel, ferry access and material transport were part of the delivery plan. The remote location did not prevent Lustalux delivering a complex specification. That is logistics competence, not a claim of identical lead times to Central Scotland, and it is not a healthcare-outcome claim.

They didn’t bat an eyelid when I presented them with a set of hugely detailed design drawings that were a challenge to match up seamlessly across 30 metres of wall and glazing, and were happy to travel all the way to Orkney to ensure the final prints were installed to a high standard. Everyone at the new Balfour Hospital is delighted with the final results. I’d happily work with them again.”

Potentially, where project scope and logistics permit. Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall is evidence that a complex wall-and-glass specification can be delivered beyond the Central Belt. Lead times are not identical to Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Yes. Optically clear window film was used at Balfour Hospital so the Flow artwork continued across glazing.
