What is privacy window film?
Privacy window film is generally available in two different forms. One is completely opaque allowing light through but preventing vision through glass night and day. The other is a “one way” or reflective film that given suitable light conditions will allow vision through one side of the glass but appearing mirrored on the other.
Frosted window film also known as Sand Blast, Satin or Etch Effect Film is ideal where total privacy is paramount. Ideal for office partitions, changing rooms and bathrooms it can also be printed on to or have bespoke designs cut out of the film.
“One Way Window Film”, Reflective Window Film” or “Mirror Film” is primarily a solar control film which as a secondary feature will afford a high level of privacy. It is an extremely popular product providing added privacy for external facing windows while allowing daytime vision out.
Once applied, the glass will appear mirrored externally during daylight hours while outward vision from the interior side of the glass will remain unobstructed.
how does one-way mirror film work?
Mirrored or reflective window film works according to light balance, meaning whichever side of the window is the brightest (exterior of a building during the day) will appear like a mirror.
Because the mirror effect of one-way window film works on light-balance, in most cases, it will only provide privacy during daylight hours. Once the sun sets and artificial lights come on inside the building, the effect of the window film will be reversed.
It is extremely difficult to achieve a one way effect with internal windows and screens but it can be done. For this to be a success the light ratio between the viewed side and the viewing side of the glass need to be approximately 7:1. In simple terms the viewed side needs to be around 7x brighter than the viewing side.
