What is glass safety film?

Safety film is an adhesive polyester layer bonded to glazing to help hold the glass together in the event of breakage. Thickness is measured in microns—standard safety compliance typically uses 100 micron (4 mil), while higher specs up to 300 micron provide increased protection.

It caters to structural glazing, internal partitions, and external windows. Lustalux specialises in nationwide installation, including complex projects requiring powered access equipment for high-level or overhead glazing.

Safety film FAQs

Does safety film prevent glass from breaking?

No, it doesn't make glass unbreakable, but it holds the shards together in the frame if it does break. This prevents injury from flying glass and maintains the building's envelope.

Is it a permanent solution?

Yes. Once applied, safety film is designed to last for 10-15 years or more. It is a durable, cost-effective alternative to replacing existing glazing with safety glass.

Will it change the appearance of my windows?

Not necessarily. Most safety films are optically clear and virtually invisible once installed, maintaining the natural light and views of your building.

What thickness of film do I need?

This depends on the goal. Standard safety compliance usually requires 100 micron (4 mil) film, while high-security or blast mitigation projects may require 175 micron (7 mil) to 300 micron (12 mil) films.
