What is glass safety film?
Safety film is an adhesive polyester layer bonded to glazing to help hold the glass together in the event of breakage. Thickness is measured in microns—standard safety compliance typically uses 100 micron (4 mil), while higher specs up to 300 micron provide increased protection.
It caters to structural glazing, internal partitions, and external windows. Lustalux specialises in nationwide installation, including complex projects requiring powered access equipment for high-level or overhead glazing.

Safety & security solutions
Tailored reinforcement for every environment, from offices to high-security sites.

Standard safety (100 micron)
The baseline for legal compliance—ideal for internal partitions and doors.

High-spec security (175+ micron)
Increased thickness for areas at higher risk of impact or intrusion.

Bomb blast mitigation
Specialist films and systems designed to manage explosion energy.
Edge attachment systems
Mechanical systems that bond the film and glass directly to the frame.
Combined solar security
Films that provide both shatter protection and heat/glare reduction.
Spontaneous breakage
Containment for toughened glass failure in overhead or high-level areas.
Technical specifications
Our safety films are available in various thicknesses to suit specific security and safety requirements.
| Film type | Thickness (micron) | Break strength | Standards |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 mil clear | 100 micron | 45 (kg/25mm) | EN 12600 Class 2 / BS 6206 Class B |
| 7 mil clear | 175 micron | 78 (kg/25mm) | EN 12600 Class 1 / BS 6206 Class A |
| 8 mil clear | 200 micron | 108 (kg/25mm) | EN 12600 Class 1 / BS 6206 Class A |
| 12 mil security | 300 micron | Blast spec | Bomb blast mitigation |

Why safety window film works
Security film adds a powerful reinforcement layer to existing glass. It doesn't just prevent breakage—it manages the outcome, ensuring that when glass does fail, it stays in the frame and out of harm's way.

Safety film FAQs
Does safety film prevent glass from breaking?
No, it doesn't make glass unbreakable, but it holds the shards together in the frame if it does break. This prevents injury from flying glass and maintains the building's envelope.
Is it a permanent solution?
Yes. Once applied, safety film is designed to last for 10-15 years or more. It is a durable, cost-effective alternative to replacing existing glazing with safety glass.
Will it change the appearance of my windows?
Not necessarily. Most safety films are optically clear and virtually invisible once installed, maintaining the natural light and views of your building.
What thickness of film do I need?
This depends on the goal. Standard safety compliance usually requires 100 micron (4 mil) film, while high-security or blast mitigation projects may require 175 micron (7 mil) to 300 micron (12 mil) films.
