the challenge
Spandrel panels on the 124-metre Euston Tower were spontaneously shattering, creating a falling-glass risk to people below. The building needed a fragment-retention intervention that could be delivered from high-level access without replacing the glazing.
our solution
Lustalux applied an external-grade clear safety film to 5,144 spandrel panels, held with an aggressive adhesive system and anchored to the frame with structural silicone. The six-month programme was delivered from cradles, with consultant involvement from Arup.
measurable impact
the strategic results delivered through our technical implementation
key outcomes
- Fragment-retention film applied to 5,144 glass spandrel panels.
- High-level cradle access coordinated around an occupied commercial high-rise.
- Consistent installation detailing across 36 storeys.
project details
Euston Tower, London
When spontaneous glass breakage created a falling-glass risk at Euston Tower, the building owners and consultants Arup appointed Lustalux to deliver a specialist safety-film intervention.
Lustalux applied an external-grade 100-micron clear safety film to 5,144 glass spandrel panels on the 124-metre, 36-storey building. Each panel was held with an aggressive adhesive system and then anchored to the frame with structural silicone.
The spandrel panels — the blank glass panes between floors — were shattering because of impurities in the glass. The work made the existing glazing safer to retain by holding fragments in place if a panel failed. It was not a blast-mitigation package and it did not replace the glass.
The installation ran for six months, working from cradles down the façade of the 1970 building. For commercial window film, signage and architectural film across London, see commercial window film in London. For the product systems, see security and safety film.
our approach
Assess the glazing risk
Spontaneous breakage in the spandrel panels created a falling-glass hazard that needed a film and edge-restraint system rather than an immediate full glass replacement.
Specify the retention system
External-grade clear safety film with adhesive and structural-silicone anchorage to the panel frames.
Programme high-level access
Cradle working over six months to treat the façade consistently from top to bottom.
project faqs
Q: Was this a London project?
Yes. Euston Tower is in London. Lustalux delivered the safety-film programme as a commercial high-rise installation.
Q: Does this mean the film is a blast-mitigation system?
No. This project specified fragment retention for spontaneous breakage. Blast-mitigation systems require separate specialist specification around glass, framing, attachment and the defined threat or performance requirement.
